Cognitive Learning Styles for Medical Laboratory Scientist

Learning is an individualized process; different education and background experiences, personality traits, levels of motivation, and numerous other variables affect the way you learn.

- Linda Wong, Essential Study Skills, Fifth Edition

There are Three Cognitive Learning Styles and these are Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic of which can help you learn more effectively. Discovering one's own learning style is an advantage and may take your learning and studying at school or at work to the next level.
In Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science field and study, the Three Cognitive Learning Styles should be taught, developed and honed from school and further more after college. Jacques Wallach, M.D. of Interpretation of Diagnostic Test, in his Introductory note he stated, "The role of the laboratory in diagnosis and treatment continues to gain importance as newer tests and analytic methods allow diagnoses that were not possible before"; ".....Clinicians depend on laboratory test data" and in it is a crucial part of "patient-physician encounters and often precede the history and physical examination".

At present age, research and special studies in Science and Technology has becoming more challenging and complex and multifaceted. Included in this is the rapid evolution of Medical Laboratory Science field. Almost every year new diseases in human body are being discovered has been increasingly growing, for that reason a newer test and analytical methods has to be developed in order for the diagnostic and treatment technology system to be competent .

Lela Buckingham of Molecular Diagnostics, p.vii "Molecular Technology has implemented into diagnostic testing in a relative short period of time. Programs that educate clinical laboratory professionals have had to incorporate molecular-based diagnostic testing into their curricula just as rapidly despite a lack of formal resources."
In Molecular Oncology laboratory for example, where cancer at a molecular level is being studied and processed, using technique that allow direct detection of genetic alterations, down to single base pair changes requires laboratory skills such as:

  • Visual or Observational skill - ability to understand underlying scientific principles, and learn technical and procedural aspects of laboratory testing by visual observations;
  • Communication and Auditory skill - capable of effective communication, able to verbalized and take note of technical or general informations including problems or matters of a scientific, technical and/or administrative nature;
  • Kinesthetic skill - has the ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in dealing with the broad scope of procedural and technical problems.

In other words, all three cognitive learning styles is highly important because these learning styles enables you to gain essential laboratory skills in operating laboratory machines, reading specimens in the microscope, communicate in technical and layman’s term about the test and test procedures and handling pre-analytical and post-analytical test.
Laboratory test results are very important in the diagnosis and prognosis of a disease. Data based evidence such as laboratory test request helps the physicians to diagnose and treat the diseases that cause all these other symptoms and properly handle the case and treat the patient’s health problem and illness accurately.  It is important not only the clinical laboratory scientists, technologist, technicians and phlebotomist to carry out, process and deliver diagnostic test procedures but much important is the quality of the test results.

For instance, if a phlebotomist has an excellent skill in blood extraction and properly performed the venipuncture techniques efficiently and a knowledgeable specimen processor in proper labelling, storage and transportation of the specimen, and a medical laboratory scientist who is capable of performing technically demanding tests and able to participate and implement quality control programs, we can be assured of the quality of the laboratory test results.
On the other hand, even though the combination of the Three Cognitive Learning Style is ideal, the is reality, humanity as whole has its limits. The capabilities of human brain has lots of potential but with tired and overworked body because of the stress and work pressure in the laboratory, the biological, chemical ergonomic, and fire hazards and lack of leadership and laboratory management skills can not be completely eliminated thus, can affect the quality assurance and performance but can be minimized through the use of engineering controls (i.e., safety features built into an overall design of equipment and supplies), personal protective equipment, and work practice controls (such as hand washing) and can be dealt with through laboratory organization.

This why to be a qualified and proficient Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technologist it requires a great deal of skills, expertise and in-depth training from point-of-care tests producing immediate answers to highly complexed laboratory test that require sophisticated technology and skilled staff. And these skills can be acquire through practice in Visual learning such as being keen observant in every laboratory protocols and procedures while thinking critically; Auditory learning, having a strong language and oral communication skills and comprehend verbal instructions; and  Kinesthetic learning, being skillful or dexterous in performing clinical laboratory works with an excellent eye-hand body coordination.

....if you do not have enough time for review classes because you are busy working in the laboratory, worry not, because working in a laboratory and practicing your profession is studying and learning in itself.

These three Learning Styles is in itself is learning and studying smarter. So when you are working in the Clinical Laboratory and at the same time preparing for an international or overseas certificate or qualifying exam such as ASCP International Medical Laboratory Scientist, AMT, AIMS, HAAD and or Prometrics to better oneself or upgrade your professional career but if you do not have enough time for review classes because you are busy working in the laboratory, worry not, because working in a laboratory and practicing your profession is studying and learning in itself.

STUDY SMARTER in Three Mastery Principles (PART I)

STUDY SMARTER in Three Mastery Principles

(PART I)

By: Christine R. Guerrero, RMT, MLS (ASCPi)CM

Always keep in mind the Three Mastery Principles of Studying Smarter:

1. Master Your Material

2. Master Test Taking

3. Master Mutiple Choice

In the First Month, Master your Material by:

  • Gathering your Review Material ( Focus only on 1 Review Textbook)
  • Get on hand the Review study guides. In the case of ASCPi exam there is a set of guidelines given in the ascp website.  Prioritized on studying the listed topics on each subjects
  • Study your material, Study and Read first the Hardest subjects before the easiest subjects
  • Watch videos about the subject's topics, write and condense your review notes, draw about bacteria, blood cells, create an interesting story about the concepts, sing a rhyming songs, create acronyms,
  • Bring with you your flashcards or mobile phone flashcards to anywhere so you can read at anytime or during breaks, and more ways of learning.
  • Remember, when working in a Laboratory you are learning, so don't be in a hurry to quit your jobs for Review lessons for 1 whole day, makes ways to spread your learning throughout the week, 1 hr each day should be fine! and don't tire your brain because you can easily forget everything you have read and studied, give time to rest your brain, it is very important to remember that LEARNING SHOULD BE FUN!
  • Start your practice in the labce.com Free Quiz Game "Daig ng maagap ang masipag". Start practicing in answering multiple choice, don't worry of the score, it's just a game, Enjoy Learning!

Summary: In the First Month, You should dedicate your time 70% in Mastering Medical Laboratory Science Concepts and Fundamentals! And 30% in Testing yourself each after your review session and practice the labce.com free quiz game.

        1st Month
70% - Mastering Medical Laboratory Science
30% - Testing yourself

In the Second Month, Master the Test-taking;

  • Decrease Studying Your Material by 30%, you should have already got the Basic ideas and overall scopes of fundamentals of Medical Laboratory Science by now.
  • Plan AHEAD your test, from start to finish! Compensate on your weakness and maximize your strengths by starting practicing multiple choice in your weakest subjects first then later on  the easiest subjects.
  • Keep reading your flash cards during break time and whenever you can, leisurely! And repetitively, even if it is already boring. There is reason behind this, it's to keep the information to your long term memory!
  • You are not actively memorizing it but passively! Information in the short term memory get easily lost when mental block and test anxiety strikes, so better keep it in the long term memory.
  • Pace yourself, keep answering, flagged the difficult questions, go back to the flagged questions after you are done answering the whole exam, by this time it is possible you have already remember what ou have studied and you are now more certain of your answers.
  • Start practicing the StudySmarter Test Taking System or StudySmarter "Table" that I taught during the tutorial sessions. This is the secret technique.
  • Trust you first gut! Unless, if you think you answer the question wrong!

By this time you should dedicate 70% of your time in practicing the Test Taking in labce free quiz game and BOC or MLS Review by Harr without time constraints.
30% for Reading and Studying as a reference for the questions in the multiple choice.
Summary: Opposite to the first month.

2nd Month
70% - Master Test Taking
30% - You can still review and read on for references

"Test Taking and Lab Testing"

"Test Taking and Lab Testing"

Written by: Christine R. Guerrero, RMT, MLS (ASCPi) CM

Preparing for an exam or test is like processing Laboratory tests. There is the
1. pre-analytical phase
2. analytical phase, and
3. post-analytical phase

Pre-analytical phase, is the before processing. A lot of preparation is needed to be done. There is the patient preparation, blood extraction, specimen preparation and etc... Making sure that there is no contamination or clerical error that will cause an erroneous and or random errors in the next stage.

It is the same way with studying for the exam,
a. You should make enough preparation and avoid procrastination.
b. Dedicate a "study area", with bright light or enough lighting, this comparable to the processing area in our lab, and we know that the Department Of Health is so hell bound on this requirements! *wink wink
c. Prepare your study material. And yourself mentally, psychologically, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
We should have all what we need in the chem testing for example, wait for the blood to clot, centrifuge, prepare the machines and reagents, control, standards, etc....

Analytical phase is the Studying part and the Test taking strategies. We study and process step by step the laboratory test procedures. We analyzed the test result and correlates it with the diagnosis. We study the Pathophysiology as an analyst and as a clinical scientist. It is the meat of the clinical laboratory, the studying and testing part.

And finally, the Post-Analytical phase whether in clinical laboratory works or in studying,

a. Compare How Well You Performed With How Well You Prepared.
Identify when you began studying for the test and the strategies you used to prepare. Likewise, determine whether your time was used efficiently and what you can do in the future to improve test scores or your laboratory skills.
b. Laboratory Record keeping can also mean Keep All of Your Study Materials. Do not throw away tests. Sometimes teachers and aides make mistakes while correcting tests. Old tests can be used to prepare for comprehensive final exams and Licensure and Certification exams in the future. And please do not sell your books, you don't know when you might need it, right? I did it once before after taking the boards, but i regret it afterwards.
c. Evaluate Your Test Answers Review test questions to determine what you did right and wrong. Identify patterns, critique your performance, and make notes of what can be done differently in the future. After reviewing tests, develop specific goals to perform better in the future.

"Branded Continuing Education"

Logically speaking Drug Testing and HIV training should be credited as a cpd because it is a continuing education for Medical Technologists, it is evident that we med techs learned a lot of new information and skills from theses training that expands our knowledge more in our Medical Technology professional field. It is like saying that only the brand name "Colgate" has the full ability to protect our teeth.

How about the other fluoride toothpaste brands like Close up, Happy, etc. Fluoride is the thing that helps protect the teeth from cavities. Continuing Education or CPD is like fluoride, it should help us for our advancement. While some may prefer other hygiene alternatives like the cheaper antibacterial Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) as mouthwash, or even baking soda for toothpaste and other proven method passed on by generations to generations, still the main purpose is to have a healthy set of teeth, it should be the same thing in the continuing education, CONTINUOUS LEARNING IS OUR MAIN GOAL!

Whether some could afford to attend the seminars from CPD providers like seminars from PAMET or in my sample analogy afford Colgate rather than the cheaper brands like Happy toothpaste, we can not deny that Happy toothpaste is still a fluoride paste and has the same effect as Colgate. The Department of Health or DOH training and seminars may not be an accredited CPD provider (yet!) but it is still a continuing education and PRC should recognized that!

On the other hand, there are a lot of learning methods and opportunities where we could gain our cpd units, like the recognition of life long learning from non-cpd providers (online and or face to face), work experience/s, informal online education like the Facebook group “MED TECH'S LOUNGE” where Med techs can discuss work-related issues and case problems, foreign online courses from labce.com and etc, Socio-civic services (medical mission and outreach, etc.), publishing a book or a Medical Laboratory Science related articles and research papers and a lot more. I compare this to the alternative option analogy such as the H2O2 mouth wash and baking soda paste to prevent the mouth from infection and cavities.

The CPD MED TECH BOARD OF COUNCIL should be considerate and reasonable enough to recognize the other forms of continuing education other than attending seminars from accredited CPD Providers, more specially to those med techs whose salary is below the minimum wage who can't afford to attend seminars and to those who are in the secluded places and the Med Techs overseas.

  • Thesis Writing for those who are finishing their Masters degree
  • Even though you may already have a thesis writing adviser and a set of readers to "help" you write   your thesis, you should enroll in this thesis writing tutorial for two main reasons. First, your thesis readers are not really there to "help" you write your thesis, they are there to shoot down your ideas. As you may have already noticed, the panel seems more intent on you changing your ideas than presenting them. But most importantly, because your thesis adviser, being part of the faculty, may unconsciously be closed to your original ideas because of his/her own ideas, the official philosophy of the faculty, or both, which will make it difficult for you to get help from him/her to support your own ideas.
  • This tutorial will help you accept and process the input from your thesis adviser and readers AND STILL allow you to be able to present your actual ideas in a persuasive way.
  • The tutor/Mentor is a Master of Divinity graduate with Cum Laude, having received a flat 1 grade in his Master’s Thesis. His advisor was an American Yale University professor.

The Benefits Of Studying At Your Own Pace

Written by: Christine Guerrero, RMT, MLS (ASCPi)CM

All I have learned, I learned from books.”

  - Abraham Lincoln

Learning is a life long process, one learns in various ways and Education is just of them. It is very good indeed that we had a career advancing opportunity to study a Four Year Bachelor degree course and graduate with our diploma to back our future calling. After  years in school, we have learned a lot of things, things that will help us to face and embark the professional field with confidence, because these are the things that we could never learn on our own such as lectures of principles and theories of the subject and demonstration or application in laboratory with full access to lab equipment and tools, another is internship programs and seminars. With all the money and time and effort we invested on our Four years of education in college, one still cannot dispute that we haven't had learned that much, and that is why we should never stop from learning and that is also what the qualifying exams and certification exam are for.

Even though college graduates thought of needing an extended review class or infamously known as "cram school" in a classroom setting to help them in their review for the qualifying exam one should study and learn on their own because of these reasons;

First, One can start studying his or her weakest subject area/s first
Second, one can figure their own approach to learning
Third, One can decide their own study time according to  their schedule.

And because there is no need to compete with others after college, they can make most of their study time to actively learn on their own, for the reason that one did not have that luxury of time because as we all know the school has a time-table and specified curriculum which led to only one thing, students have to learn with only specific amount of time in a specific time of a day and in a specific time of the year. And that is what the Study Smarter is for, to help you learn on your own even more after college specially when there is no external pressure such as studying together with other students in a classroom setting that only creates an illusion that everyone is learning in the same speed presuming everyone has understood the subject material for that day, even though that is not always the case.

One may agree or disagree with me on this, looking back from where I am now, I have observed that during my college years, we have not taught on how to study on our own, and how to really start to learn. We are only taught to memorize facts, such as, what is "Red Blood cell" and of course as a responsible student, I can answer that with all my conviction, "red blood cell or (RBC) is also called erythrocytes, are the most common type of blood cell. Hemoglobin is the protein inside red blood cells that carries oxygen." While I may have defined RBC based from Hematology textbook, I have not understood what is the point or idea of studying Hematology and why I need to study it for the rest of my life? Why should I be an expert and further study the red blood cells beyond or more than what my professor and lecturers in my review class has already taught me and my precious textbooks? Because you can never be an expert or master without wholehearted commitment in studying the subject by dedicating one's own time and effort. Do not limit yourself on what others has to offer you, DO START LEARNING ON YOUR OWN.

And because we have not learn how to study and learn on our own, we tend to depend to others. I attend an extended review class or the "cram school" after I graduated, and as expected, I Failed the board exam! And I thought by enrolling in a review class I will pass the board exam, clueless as I am, I enrolled in the class and did not learn anything. Why then the other who enrolled in the review class passed the board exam and not me? The answer is simple, they have studied enough during their college years. All they did in the review class was to refresh what the have already learned. Does one see the logic of what I am saying? They passed the exam not because of the particular "cram school" or because of the "lecturer", they passed because they deserve to.  If one does not need a to enroll in a review class why then enroll in a tutorial class or group? Review classroom is different from one-on-one tutorial. The difference is review classroom has a lecturer that studied the subject for you, you are all same studying the same material in a scheduled time in a scheduled day, no more no less, all one has to do is listen and take notes, even though not everyone can carry through.
But a tutorial means, you are studying on your own effort or have studied already on your own, and what you just need is some clarification in some difficult areas,  a tutor is just guide of you what you should know and how you should do it.

Another example why I thought enrolling in a review class after graduation is an effective way to pass my board exam is the testimonial hearsay that one can pass the qualifying exam by just, first attend the class, second, listen to the lecturers, third review material are already provided. I have nothing against that, in fact it is right indeed, the lecturers are very good at conducting lesson, I must say they really did their homework, to add to that, the review materials are very helpful.
So what then is the problem? the problem lies on me, yes myself. I have relied too much and confined all my opportunity of learning to this four-corned walls called "classroom" and I was lazy and I wanted a spoon-fed bits of facts not understanding the concept behind that facts.

To explain further, I have to change my attitude about learning. I begin by unlearning they things that did not help me. I stopped memorizing for the sake of memorizing, I tried understanding every bits of information and i got to the roots by asking myself why I am studying Hematology? Clinical Chemistry? Microbiology and Blood Banking and etc...? So that I could help the people who are suffering from the diseases, and to promote a healthy a living.

There are different Learning approach and study skills and strategies that one can adapt to learn effectively, these are:

1st. Identify your Learning Styles; One could be more on visual or auditory or kinesthetic or combination of two or more learning styles.
According to Linda Wong's Essential Study Skill, "You can lay a strong foundation for learning thoroughly and effectively when you understand your prefered learning style and select study strategies that capitalize on your learning preferences and personal strengths."

2nd. Break your study time into chunk sessions such as, 25-30 mins study time, then 5-10 minutes mini-breaks between. According to Dr. Marty Lobdell "Studying more" is not effective, in one sitting.
And make sure to dedicate a "Study area" away from bed. Provide a nice study table, comfortable chair and enough lighting conducive to studying.
In addition, (this is my secret study technique) prepare freshly brewed coffee for consumption and play a classical music on the background, as I have said in this article. Now you're ready.

3rd. Study Actively, First thing, Scan your textbook. Read for the second time, and read out loud. Take important notes, and highlight important facts. Recite, use mnemonics or compose a song about the subject.

4th. Summarize the chapter and sub chapters into your own words and see if you really understand the subject.

5th. Review and quiz yourself every after studying.

One can see now that there is no need to compete with others when realizing that every person is unique and is different in their approach to learning but still using the same principle. In fact, it is generally known that no two learners are the same. For example, One student may prefer going to a traditional school, but the other are comfortable learning in an online setting, another example, one students may prefer watching video lectures about the Different Metabolism Pathway of Red Blood Cell, Embden-Meyerhof Pathway vs. Pentose-phosphate shunt, for the reason that it is more understandable when taught visually but if it's not discussed in a form of visual map, it will be a bit harder to understand and the learning pace slows down.

The most important reason one should study and learn on their own is they can schedule their own flexible study time. Again, in the Essential Study Skill book, It said, "Time-Management is a skill to help you make balance your pie life in three main areas: school, work, leisure."
Quoting from my article I posted recently, Learning Time-management helps one balanced their time, balanced means equal amount of time for school, work, and leisure. It is a skill that needs practice, and eventually mastering it will help one meet the desired goal in a span of time or a specific amount of time. Everyone needs everyone, helping a friend, making time for family, and setting time for God and church, do charity works, is using your time wisely.
As would Ecclesiastes Chapter Three verse One would say,"To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:..."

So you can see that although college graduates thinks they need "cram school" to help them in their review for the qualifying exam by spoon-feeding the facts and not much on the concepts behind the facts, one should study and learn on their own because they know which subject area to study first to and what learning style approach  fits and effective to them, and lastly, they can decide their flexible study time schedules. Leading to a healthier and smarter study sessions at your own pace.

Abraham Lincoln as we all know, is the nominated president of the United States during the American Civil War (1861-1865), He is the guy who wrote the Gettysburg Address and the Emancipation Proclamation, a proclamation that abolished slavery, strengthens the Federal Government, and modernized the economy.

From wikipedia, "Lincoln was largely self-educated. His formal schooling from several itinerant teachers was intermittent, the sum of which may have amounted to less than a year; however, he was an avid reader and retained a lifelong interest in learning."

Thus, explained the reason he said, “All I have learned, I learned from books.”

Perhaps, I could safely say, Abraham Lincoln is the father of DIY or Do it Yourself, pun intended. But seriously, If Mr. President Abraham Lincoln cannot convince that one can study on their own at their own pace, then who can?!
