Jiko-ryū: The Principle of Autodidacticism

Jiko-ryū: The Principle of Autodidacticism
自己流 : Jiko-ryū, being self-taught.
Autodidacticism (also autodidactism) or self-education (also self-learning and self-teaching) is the education without the guidance of masters (such as teachers and professors) or institutions (such as schools). Generally, an autodidact is an individual who chooses the subject they will study, their studying material and the studying rhythm and time. An autodidact may or may not have formal education, and their study may be either a complement or an alternative to it.”
Even though teachers are still necessary and indispensable to the learning process of students primarily as role models and guides, students should learn to teach themselves and not just rely on the teacher to teach them for two main reasons. First, a good teacher may not always be available to teach students: good teachers are extremely rare, while bad teachers are numerous. But most importantly, no matter how good a teacher is, even the best teacher cannot ensure that the student will learn as much as the teacher or student wants.
In the end, students must eventually take responsibility for their own learning, and the best teachers teach their students to teach themselves. The teacher therefore provides the necessary model whereby the students can learn vicariously through the teacher’s example. This is how autodidacts learn to become the geniuses they became.

Cognitive Learning Styles for Medical Laboratory Scientist

Learning is an individualized process; different education and background experiences, personality traits, levels of motivation, and numerous other variables affect the way you learn.

- Linda Wong, Essential Study Skills, Fifth Edition

There are Three Cognitive Learning Styles and these are Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic of which can help you learn more effectively. Discovering one's own learning style is an advantage and may take your learning and studying at school or at work to the next level.
In Medical Technology or Medical Laboratory Science field and study, the Three Cognitive Learning Styles should be taught, developed and honed from school and further more after college. Jacques Wallach, M.D. of Interpretation of Diagnostic Test, in his Introductory note he stated, "The role of the laboratory in diagnosis and treatment continues to gain importance as newer tests and analytic methods allow diagnoses that were not possible before"; ".....Clinicians depend on laboratory test data" and in it is a crucial part of "patient-physician encounters and often precede the history and physical examination".

At present age, research and special studies in Science and Technology has becoming more challenging and complex and multifaceted. Included in this is the rapid evolution of Medical Laboratory Science field. Almost every year new diseases in human body are being discovered has been increasingly growing, for that reason a newer test and analytical methods has to be developed in order for the diagnostic and treatment technology system to be competent .

Lela Buckingham of Molecular Diagnostics, p.vii "Molecular Technology has implemented into diagnostic testing in a relative short period of time. Programs that educate clinical laboratory professionals have had to incorporate molecular-based diagnostic testing into their curricula just as rapidly despite a lack of formal resources."
In Molecular Oncology laboratory for example, where cancer at a molecular level is being studied and processed, using technique that allow direct detection of genetic alterations, down to single base pair changes requires laboratory skills such as:

  • Visual or Observational skill - ability to understand underlying scientific principles, and learn technical and procedural aspects of laboratory testing by visual observations;
  • Communication and Auditory skill - capable of effective communication, able to verbalized and take note of technical or general informations including problems or matters of a scientific, technical and/or administrative nature;
  • Kinesthetic skill - has the ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in dealing with the broad scope of procedural and technical problems.

In other words, all three cognitive learning styles is highly important because these learning styles enables you to gain essential laboratory skills in operating laboratory machines, reading specimens in the microscope, communicate in technical and layman’s term about the test and test procedures and handling pre-analytical and post-analytical test.
Laboratory test results are very important in the diagnosis and prognosis of a disease. Data based evidence such as laboratory test request helps the physicians to diagnose and treat the diseases that cause all these other symptoms and properly handle the case and treat the patient’s health problem and illness accurately.  It is important not only the clinical laboratory scientists, technologist, technicians and phlebotomist to carry out, process and deliver diagnostic test procedures but much important is the quality of the test results.

For instance, if a phlebotomist has an excellent skill in blood extraction and properly performed the venipuncture techniques efficiently and a knowledgeable specimen processor in proper labelling, storage and transportation of the specimen, and a medical laboratory scientist who is capable of performing technically demanding tests and able to participate and implement quality control programs, we can be assured of the quality of the laboratory test results.
On the other hand, even though the combination of the Three Cognitive Learning Style is ideal, the is reality, humanity as whole has its limits. The capabilities of human brain has lots of potential but with tired and overworked body because of the stress and work pressure in the laboratory, the biological, chemical ergonomic, and fire hazards and lack of leadership and laboratory management skills can not be completely eliminated thus, can affect the quality assurance and performance but can be minimized through the use of engineering controls (i.e., safety features built into an overall design of equipment and supplies), personal protective equipment, and work practice controls (such as hand washing) and can be dealt with through laboratory organization.

This why to be a qualified and proficient Medical Laboratory Scientist or Technologist it requires a great deal of skills, expertise and in-depth training from point-of-care tests producing immediate answers to highly complexed laboratory test that require sophisticated technology and skilled staff. And these skills can be acquire through practice in Visual learning such as being keen observant in every laboratory protocols and procedures while thinking critically; Auditory learning, having a strong language and oral communication skills and comprehend verbal instructions; and  Kinesthetic learning, being skillful or dexterous in performing clinical laboratory works with an excellent eye-hand body coordination.

....if you do not have enough time for review classes because you are busy working in the laboratory, worry not, because working in a laboratory and practicing your profession is studying and learning in itself.

These three Learning Styles is in itself is learning and studying smarter. So when you are working in the Clinical Laboratory and at the same time preparing for an international or overseas certificate or qualifying exam such as ASCP International Medical Laboratory Scientist, AMT, AIMS, HAAD and or Prometrics to better oneself or upgrade your professional career but if you do not have enough time for review classes because you are busy working in the laboratory, worry not, because working in a laboratory and practicing your profession is studying and learning in itself.

"Test Taking and Lab Testing"

"Test Taking and Lab Testing"

Written by: Christine R. Guerrero, RMT, MLS (ASCPi) CM

Preparing for an exam or test is like processing Laboratory tests. There is the
1. pre-analytical phase
2. analytical phase, and
3. post-analytical phase

Pre-analytical phase, is the before processing. A lot of preparation is needed to be done. There is the patient preparation, blood extraction, specimen preparation and etc... Making sure that there is no contamination or clerical error that will cause an erroneous and or random errors in the next stage.

It is the same way with studying for the exam,
a. You should make enough preparation and avoid procrastination.
b. Dedicate a "study area", with bright light or enough lighting, this comparable to the processing area in our lab, and we know that the Department Of Health is so hell bound on this requirements! *wink wink
c. Prepare your study material. And yourself mentally, psychologically, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
We should have all what we need in the chem testing for example, wait for the blood to clot, centrifuge, prepare the machines and reagents, control, standards, etc....

Analytical phase is the Studying part and the Test taking strategies. We study and process step by step the laboratory test procedures. We analyzed the test result and correlates it with the diagnosis. We study the Pathophysiology as an analyst and as a clinical scientist. It is the meat of the clinical laboratory, the studying and testing part.

And finally, the Post-Analytical phase whether in clinical laboratory works or in studying,

a. Compare How Well You Performed With How Well You Prepared.
Identify when you began studying for the test and the strategies you used to prepare. Likewise, determine whether your time was used efficiently and what you can do in the future to improve test scores or your laboratory skills.
b. Laboratory Record keeping can also mean Keep All of Your Study Materials. Do not throw away tests. Sometimes teachers and aides make mistakes while correcting tests. Old tests can be used to prepare for comprehensive final exams and Licensure and Certification exams in the future. And please do not sell your books, you don't know when you might need it, right? I did it once before after taking the boards, but i regret it afterwards.
c. Evaluate Your Test Answers Review test questions to determine what you did right and wrong. Identify patterns, critique your performance, and make notes of what can be done differently in the future. After reviewing tests, develop specific goals to perform better in the future.

"Branded Continuing Education"

Logically speaking Drug Testing and HIV training should be credited as a cpd because it is a continuing education for Medical Technologists, it is evident that we med techs learned a lot of new information and skills from theses training that expands our knowledge more in our Medical Technology professional field. It is like saying that only the brand name "Colgate" has the full ability to protect our teeth.

How about the other fluoride toothpaste brands like Close up, Happy, etc. Fluoride is the thing that helps protect the teeth from cavities. Continuing Education or CPD is like fluoride, it should help us for our advancement. While some may prefer other hygiene alternatives like the cheaper antibacterial Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) as mouthwash, or even baking soda for toothpaste and other proven method passed on by generations to generations, still the main purpose is to have a healthy set of teeth, it should be the same thing in the continuing education, CONTINUOUS LEARNING IS OUR MAIN GOAL!

Whether some could afford to attend the seminars from CPD providers like seminars from PAMET or in my sample analogy afford Colgate rather than the cheaper brands like Happy toothpaste, we can not deny that Happy toothpaste is still a fluoride paste and has the same effect as Colgate. The Department of Health or DOH training and seminars may not be an accredited CPD provider (yet!) but it is still a continuing education and PRC should recognized that!

On the other hand, there are a lot of learning methods and opportunities where we could gain our cpd units, like the recognition of life long learning from non-cpd providers (online and or face to face), work experience/s, informal online education like the Facebook group “MED TECH'S LOUNGE” where Med techs can discuss work-related issues and case problems, foreign online courses from labce.com and etc, Socio-civic services (medical mission and outreach, etc.), publishing a book or a Medical Laboratory Science related articles and research papers and a lot more. I compare this to the alternative option analogy such as the H2O2 mouth wash and baking soda paste to prevent the mouth from infection and cavities.

The CPD MED TECH BOARD OF COUNCIL should be considerate and reasonable enough to recognize the other forms of continuing education other than attending seminars from accredited CPD Providers, more specially to those med techs whose salary is below the minimum wage who can't afford to attend seminars and to those who are in the secluded places and the Med Techs overseas.

  • Thesis Writing for those who are finishing their Masters degree
  • Even though you may already have a thesis writing adviser and a set of readers to "help" you write   your thesis, you should enroll in this thesis writing tutorial for two main reasons. First, your thesis readers are not really there to "help" you write your thesis, they are there to shoot down your ideas. As you may have already noticed, the panel seems more intent on you changing your ideas than presenting them. But most importantly, because your thesis adviser, being part of the faculty, may unconsciously be closed to your original ideas because of his/her own ideas, the official philosophy of the faculty, or both, which will make it difficult for you to get help from him/her to support your own ideas.
  • This tutorial will help you accept and process the input from your thesis adviser and readers AND STILL allow you to be able to present your actual ideas in a persuasive way.
  • The tutor/Mentor is a Master of Divinity graduate with Cum Laude, having received a flat 1 grade in his Master’s Thesis. His advisor was an American Yale University professor.
